INSTRUCTIONS:

1 | Prime and paint – a gray primer can help with coverage. Tint the Metallic Paint Tint Base Bronze with a nice dose of Slow Dry Fluid Acrylic Carbon Black for a darker shade. Add 1 part of the Metallic Paint Matting Additive to the ratio of 10:1 to your dark bronze Metallic Paint. This will provide a nice matte finish. Roll on 2 coats with your preferred roller and let dry.
(Photo 1)

2 | Using a quality brush, apply 2 coats of Pre-mixed Metallic Paint Moondust in a cascading style across the upper middle section of the space. Lightly feather out the edges as you go along. Let dry.
(Photos 2 – 4)

3 | Apply the Glass Bead Gel in a vertical, stria manner over the Moondust with a chip brush, but not too thickly. Create drifts with large and small sections of Glass Bead Gel. Finesse to a feather’s touch all over and along the edges. You can also add hints of glass beads in the bronze area below for added sparkle. As it’s drying, the Glass Bead Gel will dry clear. Let dry fully.
(Photo 5)

4 | Apply the Glass Bead Gel XL in the same manner.
(Photo 6)

5 | Create as chunky or refined a look as you desire and fill the rest of the space.
(Photo 7)

6 | As it’s drying, the Glass Bead Gel will dry clear. Note that thicker application areas may dry more opaquely. Let dry fully. Here is the final finish.

Decorative Finish: One Thousand Flowers

One Thousand Flowers by Arteriors
DECORATIVE FINISH HOW-TO

One Thousand Flowers

Artist: Arteriors

PROJECT SUPPLIES:

INSTRUCTIONS:

Introduction: This pattern was inspired by the design technique of Mille Fleur, seen in many European tapestries made during the Renaissance. It’s also a finish that reflects the exquisite beauty of plant-life and the eco-system that it supports. The horizontally combed glass beads add a sparkly “gilded-lily” affect. One Thousand Flowers pattern stencil was designed by us specifically for this Golden Paintworks finish.

1 | Prep, prime, and apply a solid coat of Benjamin Moore Sweet Pea 2031-30 in a matte sheen. Allow to dry completely.
(Photo 1)

2 | Mix one part Glazing Medium with Slow Dry Fluid Acrylics Chromium Oxide Green, Carbon Black, and a bit of Burnt Umber to match Benjamin Moore Hunter Green, #2041-10. Add a little water and mix so that it is the consistency of whole milk.
(Photo 2)

3 | Dip a damp, but not dripping, sea sponge into the dark green and tap onto the light green base coat in large shapes, covering only about 1/3 of the area.
(Photo 3)

4 | Mix another container of Glazing Medium with enough water to make a half and half cream consistency. With a large 3″ brush, swish over the sponged areas with the Glazing Medium to soften and blend the dark green glaze.
(Photo 4)

Allow to dry completely, and repeat step 2 two or three times more. Allow to dry completely.
(Photo 5)

5 | Water down the Pre-Mixed Metallic Paint Vintage Brass a little so that it is the same consistency as half and half cream. (Photo 6)

Apply it over the dark green finish in haphazard strokes with a large 3″ brush, covering about 1/3 of the area.
(Photo 7)

Tap gently with a clean damp sponge over the bronze brushstrokes. Allow to dry slightly, but not completely. Use a blow dryer to speed the partial drying process. With a damp sponge or damp cotton rag, gently wipe across the grain of the brushstrokes to remove some of the bronze paint, leaving an organically distressed appearance.
(Photo 8)

Rub harder depending on how dry the metallic paint has become. Allow to dry completely, approximately 24 hours.
(Photo 9)

6 | Apply your preferred floral stencil. The one we are using is a low-tack adhesive stencil. If using a mylar stencil, secure it with low-tack painter’s tape. Using a piece of upholstery foam with a flat section or a stencil brush, tap the Benjamin Moore Sweet Pea 2031-30 over the entire stencil as a base. Tap the brush or foam on a rag after loading with paint so that the application is fairly dry. Keep pouncing the light green over the stencil so that everything has had at least one layer. Leave this application to be un-even so that the over-all look will have a dappled-light affect. Allow to dry completely.
(Photo 10)

7 | Make the second stencil color by mixing one part Clear Top Coat Dead Flat with one part Slow Dry Fluid Acrylic Yellow Oxide. Make the third stencil color by mixing the same ratio Clear Top Coat Dead Flat and Slow Dry Fluid Acrylic Chromium Oxide Green.
(Photo 11)

8 | Stencil over everything with both colors, blending one color into the other to create a multi-layered, natural appearance.
(Photo 12)

If using a mylar stencil, remove the stencil immediately and let dry. If using a low-tack stencil, allow to dry completely for 24 hours, and then peel off the stencil to reveal the artwork.
(Photo 13)

9 | Mix eight parts Glass Bead Gel XL with one part water.
(Photo 14)

With a metal or plastic trowel, apply an even, flat coat over the entire surface.
(Photo 15)

With a notched rubber squeegee or a combing tool, apply pressure and drag horizontally across the surface, wiggling the tool as much as you desire. With a small rubber spatula, scrape the comb into a container to be re-used. Scoop up excess glass bead gel at the end of your drag, being careful not to bump into the finished drag section. Place the end of your tool to overlap 1″ of the previous section and drag next section. Repeat until wavy lines are done.
(Photo 16)

10 | Using a rubber subtractive tool, or the end of an artist paint brush covered in a damp rag, drag through any sections that are filled in solid. Allow to dry completely, approximately 10 hours.
(Photo 17)

Here is the final texture.
(Photo 18)

IMPORTANT NOTE: Clean up the Glass Bead Gel tools with soap and water in a separate bucket. Strain through a sieve or put clean-up water in a lidded container to throw out. Do not pour down the sink!

PROJECT SUPPLIES:

INSTRUCTIONS:

1 | Base a coat of primer and let dry. Apply a layer of Metallic Texture Tint Base Pearl with a spatula or blade. Run a stiff brush through the texture to mimic the look of grass cloth. Allow to dry.
(Photos 1-2)

2 | Mix equal parts of the Slow Dry Fluid Acrylic Phthalo Green and the Phthalo Blue and cover the ribbed texture using a chip brush. Make enough paint mixture to use in the next step. Let dry.
(Photo 3)

3 | Using the grasscloth pattern as a guide, measure out the stripes as you’d like, in the opposite direction of the grasscloth pattern. Tape them off. Then, mix together equal amounts of the Glass Bead Gels, glitter and enough of the leftover Slow Dry Fluid Acrylic mixture from Step 1 to a workable consistency.
(Photo 4)

4 | Using a small blade, pick up the Glass Bead Gel mix with a blade and apply it evenly within the taped stripes. This figure shows the just applied wet glass bead gel mixture. Remove tape as soon as possible. Allow to dry for at least 8 hours.

PROJECT SUPPLIES:

INSTRUCTIONS:

1 | Basecoat with two coats of Benjamin Moore Kendall Charcoal. Let dry.
(Photo 1)

2 | Mix the Glass Bead Gel with Slow Dry Fluid Acrylics in Carbon Black for a mid-dark gray and a bit of water to make it easier to roll.
(Photo 2)

3 | Lay your stencil pattern down and secure with tape or stencil adhesive to prevent seepage. In this case, we were going for the look of a mermaid tail, so we used a scallop pattern. Roll on a base of the tinted, thinned Glass Bead Undercoat over the stencil, ensuring it doesn’t seep under. Remove the stencil to clean it and let the pattern dry.
(Photo 3)

4 | Mix your Glass Bead Gel XL with Bright Silver Metallic Paint (60%) and Pewter Metallic Paint (40%).
(Photo 4)

5 | Brush the custom colored Glass Bead Gel XL over the pattern carefully.
(Photo 5)

6 | Dry areas before laying the stencil over the wet parts. Once done, let dry completely.

Decorative Finish: Beaded Brocade

Beaded Brocade

Artist: Beth Warnecke

PROJECT SUPPLIES:

INSTRUCTIONS:

1 | Basecoat with two coats of Benjamin Moore Dove Wing, and let dry. Mix Glass Bead Undercoat with up to 20% water to thin for rolling consistency. Roll on a very thin, even coat with hairy roller. Let dry.
(Photo 1)

2 | Mix each individual color of Metallic Texture 3:1 with the Glazing Gel. Whip to a creamy consistency.

a. Dampen sea sponge roller and roll on an even but stippled coat of the Dirty Martini mix. You will see basecoat underneath, aim for 90% coverage.

b. Follow same rolling technique with the French Gold, again 70-80% coverage but allowing the Dirty Martini to show through.
(Photo 2)

c. Let these two colors set up a bit, about 10 minutes. Then, gently flatten with your flex trowel – flattening the stipples but still leaving a creamy dimension.
(Photo 3)

3 | Follow the same rolling technique with the sea sponge roller and Pearl Frost mixture when Step 2 is fairly dry. This time, you are just adding highlights with the Pearl Frost, aiming for 40-50% coverage. At this point you can also add in more French Gold. Let these two colors set up a bit then flatten softly with the flex trowel, blending and swirling the colors but keeping the colors separate from each other and not muddying them into a third color. Make sure to still see some Dirty Martini in the background. When completely dry, use the high nap roller to roll on an even coat of clear Glazing Gel. Let dry.
(Photo 4)

4 | Spray stencil adhesive to the back of your stencil and let set for 10 minutes. Position the stencil, press firmly, and then apply the Glass Bead Gel XL using an old hotel key or gift card. Using a thin card like this will give you the cleanest look when pulling thick product through a stencil.
(Photo 5)

Tip: If the glass bead gel is troweled next to any painters tape, make sure to pull your tape up before the glass bead gel dries or the glass beads may pull off when removing the tape.

Here is the final finish.

TEXTURES

Golden Paintworks® produces an intriguing, eclectic series of architectural Textures. As a group they are all water based, tintable, acrylic coatings but each one has its own personality and unique decorative qualities.

By clicking the button below, you will be redirected to our eCommerce site.

Metallic Texture Tintable Bases

Golden Paintworks’ two Metallic Texture Tint Bases are the foundation for creating our Pre-Tinted Metallic Texture colors, as well as custom tinting in the studio or jobsite. We recommend using small amounts of colorant, Slow Dry Fluid Acrylic colors or mixing in Metallic Paint colors to create your own palette. Both the Pearl Tint Base and the Gold Tint Base can be used on their own as a bright and lively pearl or a brilliant gold. Each color will produce a soft, metallic sparkle with varied sheens and movement across the finish. Traditionally applied by trowel, the final finish requires no burnishing or top coating, which adds to its popularity. Available in Quart & Gallon sizes.

Metallic Texture Pre-Tinted Colors

Golden Paintworks® Pre-Tinted Metallic Textures are water based, acrylic, highly pigmented with pearlescent, mica particles and tinted on-demand. Each color will produce a soft, metallic sparkle with varied sheens and movement across the finish. Traditionally applied by trowel, the final finish requires no burnishing or top coating, which adds to its popularity. Available in Quart & Gallon sizes.

Venetian Plaster Tint Base

Golden Paintworks® Venetian Plaster Tintable Base is the foundation for creating our Pre-Tinted Venetian Plaster colors as well as custom tinting in the studio or jobsite. It contains enough Titanium Dioxide that it can be used as a “White” or creating very light tints. However, it can easily be tinted to mid-tone colors. We recommend using controlled colorants or dispersed pigments to tint the product. Applied by trowel in thin layers, then burnished by applying pressure to the trowel’s edge while drying will produce a highly polished, marble-like finish. Available in Quart & Gallon sizes.

Soapstone Tint Base

Golden Paintworks® Soapstone Tint Base is the foundation for creating our Soapstone Pre-Tinted colors, as well as custom tinting in the studio or jobsite. Its versatile nature allows it to be intermixed with other decorative products for creating a truly unique finish. Soapstone can be mixed with pre-tinted flat architectural paint to create a color, or use controlled colorants or pigment dispersions. When trowel applied, it exhibits a subtle movement of color across the surface with little to no sheen. It contains no Titanium Dioxide so colors are rich and vibrant. A great product for producing dimensional ornament without cracking. When dry, it has ample holdout for over-glazing, painting or additional layers of Texture.  Available in Quart & Gallon sizes.

Sandstone Tint Base

Golden Paintworks® Sandstone Tint Base is the foundation for creating our Sandstone Pre-Tinted colors, as well as custom tinting in the studio or jobsite. It is a light gray, tintable, acrylic texture with a sandy, slightly course, uniform aggregate that can be left rough or troweled smooth, depending on the desired finish. When dry, it holds glazes well, yet offers time to work a colored glaze before it sets. Sandstone can be colored with paint up to 25% of its volume without affecting its working properties. A wide variety of finishes, including faux concrete, can be achieved. Available in Quart & Gallon sizes.

Application Tools

At Golden Paintworks, we believe the best decorative finishes start with the best products, applied with the best tools available. That’s why we offer PAVAN trowels from Italy.

  • PAVAN Trapezoid Stainless Steel Trowels contain a special stainless alloy that minimizes metal abrasion. The Inox Blade has rounded corners and tapered edges with a welded, hand-friendly synthetic grip.
  • Our PAVAN Specialty Trapezoid Plastic Trowel is made from plastic-welded and reinforced, white, Sicodur Plastic. It has straight edges, rounded corners, and the same hand-friendly synthetic grip as the Steel Trowels. Perfect for final coats that have a tendency to metal-mark.
  • For small, tight working areas, we offer Blue Blade Spatulas, which are great for applying Venetian Plasters, especially around door jams and windows. Blued Steel prevents rusting of the blade.
